Michael Mirson “I’m an Old Soldier”

Michael (Mirsajev) Mirson , age 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, December 3, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Sona and Idris Mirsajev. Michael was born in Khancalli, Armenia and is of Azerbaijani heritage. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather . He is survived by his wife Maria Mirson, daughters Selma Pare, Nora Brown and her husband Chris Brown and Christine Mirson -Tohme; his grandchildren, Mouna Goyette and her husband Matt Goyette, Maya Mirson-Tohme and Michael Pappas and his wife Katie Pappas; his great grandchildren, Josh, Emilee and Jamie Pappas. He also has many surviving relatives in Azerbaijan. He was one of seven brothers and three sisters.

Michael grew up in the Armenia/Azerbaijan on his family’s farm and was trained and educated as a veterinarian, specializing in horses. He was conscripted into the Soviet Army during World War II and fought in the Caucasus front where he was captured by the German Army nearing the end of the war. Michael then resided in Germany where he met and married Maria Drewniok . They struggled in a post war country and opted to move to build a better life for their family. His veterinarian skills made it possible for him to immigrate to the United States in 1951 with daughters Selma and Christine. He and Maria worked very hard over the years and owned several restaurants in their lifetime. They resided in Boston for over sixty years. He was a devoted husband and was married to Maria for seventy years!

Michael was an honorable, compassionate and courageous man with deep family commitments and a love of nature and animals that he instilled in his descendants.
Strong willed and determined, his favorite saying was “ I’m an old soldier”.
He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends!

In 2014 Michael was honored by the Witness to War Foundation and the interview he gave detailing his war stories was submitted into the U.S. Library of Congress. A DVD copy will be available at his memorial service to be held on Monday, December 18 from 5-7 pm at Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St. West Roxbury, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be made to any VFW organization.

A Celebration of His Life event will be held in 2018. Time and place to be announced!
