Obituary

Cal Jones, formerly of Pawcatuck and recently relocated to Solomons, Maryland, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2017, at the age of 90. Everyone who knew him recognized Cal as both a gentleman and a gentle man.

Cal was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Mary Dinoto Jones. He is survived by his sons Tom Jones of Lusby, Maryland, and Bob Jones of Lafayette, California, as well as their wives Susan Jones and Catherine Jester. Cal has four grandchildren, Nate Jones, Amanda Zimmermann, Elliot Jones and Hank Jones. His great grandchildren are Olivia, Addison and Drew. He often recalled with affection his many extended family members from the Westerly/Pawcatuck area.

Cal lived for most of his life in Pawcatuck following a career as a US Naval Officer and then as an administrator at URI. He is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He and his family traveled extensively throughout the country and the world. Cal has been an active member of Lions International in both Pawcatuck and Maryland for over 50 years, and before moving to Maryland two years ago was a parishioner at St. Michael’s Church where he was married 69 years ago. Cal was also an active member of the Maria Assunta Society of St. Michael’s, following the tradition of his father-in-law, Antonio Dinoto, of Tusa, Sicily. Just one year ago, Cal and his son Tom visited Tusa and were pleased to read all the familiar names from Westerly and Pawcatuck on Tusa’s World War II memorial in the center of the mountaintop village.

Since moving to Maryland recently, Cal has sorely missed his friends, family, neighbors and golfing buddies in Pawcatuck. However, he has made hundreds of new friends since moving to Maryland and leaves us all a legacy of his kindness and generosity.

His family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, December 7 from 9:00 to 10:30am at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Church in Stonington followed by interment at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Pawcatuck.

Friends may honor Cal with donations in his name to the Pawcatuck Lions Club at PO Box 1706, Pawcatuck, CT 06379.
