Obituary

In Raynham, John Herbert Wittig, Age 88, passed away peacefully in Life Care Center of Raynham following a lengthy illness. John is survived by his loving wife Judith (Brimicombe) Wittig of Taunton. John was born in Worcester, the son of the late Herbert R. & Bernice (Grogan) Wittig. John was a 1947 graduate from Coyle High School and a 1951 graduate from the College of Holy Cross. He earned his Master’s Degree from Bridgewater State University in 1957. John attended summer courses studying at Hamilton College in NY. In 1971 to 1972, John spent a sabbatical academic year studying at Universite de Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France. He was employed for the City of Taunton at Taunton High School, teaching both French and Latin. John served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed horticulture, nature, walks in the woods, beaching, classical music. He was an avid reader, especially history, comparative religions, theology, philosophy and languages. John also enjoyed golfing with his close friends, Joe O’Boy and Jim Garvin, who are both deceased. In addition to his wife, John leaves his sons Carl Philipp Wittig of Dover, NH and Johann Christian Wittig and his wife Ellen of Avon, CT. He was preceded in death by his sister Barbara Sanford. John also leaves his two grandchildren Leighton George Wittig and Hannah May Wittig. Funeral home visiting hours will be held at the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington St., Taunton; MA 02780 on Thursday, December 14th from 5-7 pm. Graveside service will be at Mayflower Hill Cemetery in Taunton on Friday at 10 am.
