Obituary

BURTON, Edward J. "Tip" passed away peacefully in the company of his family on Nov. 19, 2017, at his home in West Roxbury. Tip was born Jan. 31, 1926, grew up in St. Cecilia’s Parish in the Back Bay, and attended the Prince School and Commerce High.

As a 2nd Division Marine in World War II, he served during the invasions of Saipan and Tinian, was in the first unit sent to Nagasaki after the second atomic bomb, and served in the Army of Occupation. Back home, he married Paula Jean Muir and moved to Framingham, where he raised a family, worked as a salesman and served many years as an elected trustee of his favorite haunt, the Framingham Library. Tip was a voracious reader, an author of songs and plays, and a man who could often be found tap-dancing on a wooden platform in the basement of his home. He loved the horses, devoured the newspaper and treated his friends and family like royalty. When Tip smiled, the room lit up.

Tip is survived by Paula (Muir), his devoted wife of 58 years, his loving daughter Deborah (Burton) McKie, his cherished grandson, Michael McKie, his beloved sisters Dolores Burton of West Roxbury, and Rosemary Scott of Illinois. He was the brother of the late Lester, Bill, and Jack. Tip is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
