PEAKS ISLAND- Steven Arnold Pedersen, age 70, of Peaks Island, passed away peacefully on Nov. 1?8, 2017.
He was born in Portland on Sept. 16, 1947, a son of the late Samuel and Althea (Staples) Pedersen.
After graduating from Portland High School in 1965 ?and later attending RM school at Governor's Island, Steven went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Coast Guard. During his service, he was a radioman? stationed in San Juan, ?Puerto Rico. Of note, he played for the Coast Guard basketball team?, and played in a game against the Harlem Globetrotters.
He went on to graduate in 1978 at USM with degrees in history and English, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1980.
Steven was a teacher at Frank Jewett Elementary School in Buxton for 22 years, teaching second and third grade students.
Steven will always be remembered for ?the joy he had with stamp collecting and island living. He enjoyed studying genealogy of? the pioneer island families, and the peace he had being on his home island – Peaks Island. Both sides of his family had a long connection living away from the mainland. During his younger years, he played baseball on the island teams.
He was a member of American Legion Post #142 on Peaks Island, Portland Masonic Lodge #1 AF & AM – later Triangle Lodge, and Kora Shrine.
He is survived by his children- Nathan Pedersen of Peaks Island and Meghan Sebens and her husband Daniel of Beverly, MA; and a brother- Lee “Pete” Pedersen of Vinalhaven.
A celebration of Steven’s life will be held on Saturday Dec. 2, at ?1 PM, followed by a luncheon and gathering at the Peak’s Island American Legion Hall. Pastor Beau Boyle will officiate.
