Obituary

WAYLAND: David A. Lang, 76, died on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Weston. He was born in Manhattan, New York on July 12, 1941 the son of the late Harold M. Lang and Marion (Herbig) Lang.
David is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kathleen (McCarthy) Lang of Wayland, daughter Amy Lang Zapata and her husband Socrates Zapata of New Orleans, son Jonathan D. Lang and his wife Tiffany (Holland) Lang of Framingham, grandchildren Isabela and Emilio Zapata of New Orleans, Paul and Amelia Lang of Framingham, brother Robert B. Lang of Nantucket and nieces Jesse Lang of New York City and Erica Lang of Mashpee MA.
David was a resident of Wayland for the past 48 years. He grew up in Syosset, Long Island NY. He graduated from Saint Dominic High School in Oyster Bay NY. He received his BS in Biology from Fairfield University and then completed a graduate program in Medical Illustration at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
In 1965, David was employed as a Scientific Illustrator with the Department of Chemistry at Harvard University. In 1972, he began teaching art at the Middlesex School in Concord MA, and was later named Head of the Art Department, retiring in 2003. He was a vibrant, innovative educator working with students and faculty in a variety of art forms to expand the curriculum.
David was an accomplished and well respected artist in the area. He was a Founding Member of the Danforth Museum in Framingham, served on the Collections Committee at Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, and was a member of the Boston Sculptors Gallery.
David was an indefatigable free spirit with many loves – fishing, sailing, flying, exploring, music, photography, creating, and teaching - often all at the same time. After visiting Ireland in 1995, David developed deep friendships in County Clare, in particular through music and oral history. He will be remembered for his quick wit and ability to extend friendship to people from all walks of life. David found special joy in his family.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2PM at the First Parish in Wayland, 50 Cochituate Road (Rtes. 20 and 27/126), Wayland Center.
Private family interment in South Cemetery in Wayland will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial gifts in David’s memory may be sent to Fuller Craft Museum, 455 Oak Street, Brockton, MA 02301, First Parish in Wayland, or a charity of your choice.
