Obituary

John (Jack) F. Dunn, Jr age 87 of Mansfield formerly of Sharon passed away at Orchard Cove in Canton on Nov. 8th surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born in Passaic, New Jersey to John F. and Loretta Dunn. He attended public schools in Fairlawn, NJ and went on to earn his B.Sc., M.Sc. & D.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Throughout his college career Jack served as First Lieutenant in the ROTC and during his graduate years conducted research for the US Navy.
After his time at MIT, he spent several years as a chief engineer at Walworth Valve. Jack then chose to move into academia in order to spend more time with his family. An Emeritus Professor, Jack taught Mechanical Engineering at Northeastern University for the next 30 years before retiring in 1992. While at Northeastern, he was instrumental in developing the doctoral program.

Jack was a long time member of the First Congregational Church in Sharon where he served as a deacon and was a member of the men’s club. He was involved in the Boy Scouts for most of his life, as a scout and troop leader.
He and his wife Marjorie, married just shy of 65 years, raised four sons and a daughter in Sharon before moving to The Village at Willow Crossings in Mansfield where they enjoyed their retirement for the last 16 years.
Jack will forever be remembered as an avid gardener, woodworker and handyman. He was always up for a new challenge or adventure and enjoyed traveling the world with his wife by his side.
He particularly enjoyed his off the grid summer home in East Barnard Vermont. Along with the help of many friends and family, Jack designed and built a one of a kind family retreat that will forever remain a part of his great legacy.
Beloved husband of Marjorie E (Lynch). Loving father of Douglas W. Dunn & his wife Karen of Mansfield, J. Scott Dunn & his wife Celeste Bernardo-Dunn of Sharon, Alan Fraser Dunn of Norton, Craig P. Dunn & his wife Kathy of Charlottesville, VA and Marjorie Jeanne McCluskey & her husband Joseph of Sharon. Brother of the late William Dunn and Sharon Lee Dunn. Also survived by 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and extended family. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday Nov. 18th at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church of Sharon 29 North Main St. Sharon. Visiting hours omitted and burial private. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Jack can be made to Mansfield Ambulance Fund 10 Plymouth St. Mansfield, MA 02048.
