Obituary


Donald F. Vanderstreet, age 82 of Brockton, died at his home November 5, 2017, surrounded lovingly by his family. He was the husband of Susan (Ladd-Poliseno) Vanderstreet and the late Elizabeth McGrath. He was born October 12, 1935, the son of the late Louis C. and Blanche (Kenney) Vanderstreet. Donald was raised and educated in Brockton and was a 1954 graduate of Brockton High School
.
He played on the 1954 championship basketball team and received a full basketball scholarship to Boston University, where he captained the 1958 team and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He attended Boston University receiving his B.S in Education in 1958. He received his Masters Degree in Administrative Education in 1963.

Don started teaching at North Jr High School in Brockton in 1958 and later became department Chairman of Physical Education at Brockton High School from 1970 until his retirement in 1994.

Don was the past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Seville Council No. 93, was a member of local, state and National Education Associations, Club National, and the Brockton Country Golf Club. Don was a very active golfer.

Don is survived by his wife Susan; his son Steven and wife Cindi of West Bridgewater, and grandchildren Connor and Julia; his three daughters, Laurie and husband William Murphy of Plymouth, and grandchildren Daniel, Kelly, Elizabeth and the late William H. Murphy Jr.; Lynne and husband Scott Ames of West Bridgewater and grandchildren Emily and Eric; Tracy and husband George Dixon III and grandson George IV; and was preceded in death by his late son Donald (Chip) Vanderstreet Jr.
Don was the brother of the late Louis Vanderstreet and his wife Phyllis Vanderstreet; and his late sister Rosalie Rounds.

He also leaves his step children, James Poliseno and wife Karyn and step-grandchildren Olivia and Matthew; step daughter Amy Welch and step-grandchildren Nolan and Braedyn; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (rte. 123) Brockton on Thursday 4-8 pm. A procession will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 9:30 am for a funeral Mass at 10:30 am in St. Ann Church, 95 N. Main St. West Bridgewater. Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Don’s name to Old Colony Hospice, 321 Manley St., W. Bridgewater, MA 02379.
