Obituary

Douglas A. Cassell, 77, a 47-year resident of Sherborn, passed away on October 13, 2017. He was the husband of Patricia (Lace) Cassell, to whom he was married for 48 years.

Douglas was born in 1940 in Roanoke, Virginia, to the late Lt. Col. (ret) Harold A. and Mary K. Cassell. Raised in a military family, his father having been a career Army officer and veteran of the Normandy campaign in World War II, Douglas lived in Korea, Kansas, Maryland, Japan, and Georgia before coming to Massachusetts to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Douglas graduated in Mathematics from MIT in 1962 and went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Mathematics from Northeastern University in 1967.

Douglas retired from Hewlett-Packard in 2007 at the end of a 45 year career in computer programming, hardware and systems design and military systems work. Prior to Hewlett-Packard, he was with Compaq Computer, Microcom, Sherborn Software Systems, Analogic, Inconix, Control Logic, Computer Guild, and Sylvania Electronic Systems. He was the author of two textbooks and held a patent for a distributed measurement and control system.

Douglas was also active in Sherborn affairs, being a founder and two-time chairman of the Farm Pond Advisory Committee and a long-time member, commodore, and director of the Sherborn Yacht Club.

He leaves his wife, Patricia, a daughter, Kim McGuire and her husband, Robert, of Germantown, MD, and a son, Kevin and his wife, Betsy, of Fort Lauderdale, FL and three granddaughters, Megan and Katelyn McGuire and Chelsea Cassell, and one grandson Ryan Cassell. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Cassell Karabelski of Columbus, GA.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Theresa of Lisieux Church, 35 South Main Street, Sherborn. A reception to remember and celebrate his life will follow.

Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery, Sherborn.

Visiting hours are from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2017 at St. Theresa’s Church.
