Obituary

Charles D. "Donald" Southern, a resident of Livermore Falls, Maine and a former 19 year resident of Charlestown and also a former resident of Winchester, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017 at his home in Livermore Falls, Maine surrounded by his loving family. He was 94 years old.

Donald was born in Strong, Maine on October 7, 1923, a son of the late William Southern and Doris T. (Bean) Southern. Don attended school at the Perkins School For The Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts where he tested the prototype of the Perkins Brailler designed by his teacher and mentor, David Abraham. He then continued his education at Newton Trade School. Don worked as a close-tolerance machinist at United-Carr Fastener Corporation and TRW Carr Division both located in Cambridge. He retired after 32 years of dedicated employment. On September 30, 1967, he married his loving wife of 50 years, Joan Hardy. They returned to Maine following his retirement and settled down near his mother and sister in Livermore Falls. He enjoyed woodworking, metal lathe turning, ham and CB radio operating, lapidary, birds and nature, and was known for his dry sense of humor.

Don is the beloved husband of 50 years to Joan H. (Hardy) Southern. He is the devoted father of Lyn L. Southern of Peabody, Jessica D. Whitney of Washington, Lisa J. Darnell of Virginia, Ronald W. Southern of Brockton, Charles D. Southern of Wilmington and Walter E. Southern of Charlestown. He is the loving Grandfather to 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He is the beloved twin brother of the late Ronald Southern and brother of the late Verna Southern.

Don's Funeral Services and burial will be private.
