EMERSON, Joseph Day 90, of Newton died Tuesday, September 26, 2017. He was born July 21, 1927 in Boston to Paul and Ruth (Ellms) Emerson. He married Virginia Collins August 3, 1974.
He graduated high school at Newton High School and joined the Navy for service near the end of World War II. He then received his Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and later got his Masters in Education from Harvard University. He taught in Weston.
He enjoyed teaching, travel, skiing, photography, and gardening.
He is survived by his sister, Edith Emerson Blank, Rockford, IL, his nieces and nephew, Linda (Walton) Rosquist, Woodstock, IL; Dianne (Phillip) Giovingo, Roscoe, IL; Cynthia (Curt) Austin, Leoma, TN; Christopher Blank, Hanover, MD; his sister-in-law, Sheila Collins, San Francisco, CA; and brother-in-law, Richard Collins, Lakeville, CT; and his wife’s nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
