Obituary

Rev. John L. Mansfield, Jr., age 91, of Newton Center, died September 17, 2017. Born and raised in Newton, he was the son of the late John L. and Bertha E. (Joyce) Mansfield, Sr. and brother of the late Philip J. Mansfield. He was a 1943 graduate of Newton High School, a 1947 graduate of Dartmouth College and a 1953 graduate of St. John’s Seminary. On February 2, 1953 he was ordained in Boston. His parish assignments included Woburn and Swampscott and he retired as the pastor of St. Ann’s Church in West Bridgewater.

Fr. Mansfield began his twenty year military career by enlisting in the Navy where he served for two years. He was then commissioned as a USAF Chaplain, serving for eighteen years on twelve bases, five of them overseas. As a result of his service in Vietnam, he became the recipient of the Bronze Star.

Visiting Hours will be held at Regina Cleri, 60 Wm. Cardinal O’Connell Way, Boston, Thursday 2-4pm. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, September 22, at Sacred Heart Church, 1317 Center Street, Newton Center at 12 pm. Burial with military honors will follow in Newton Cemetery.
