Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Chieko K. "Betty" (Kayano) Bernatchez, 92, of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, September 10, 2017. She passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan on November 29, 1924, a beloved daughter of the late Ryozo Kayano and Kuni (Maeki) Kayano. She was raised in Japan where she graduated from local schools. She immigrated to the United States in 1955 and settled in Westfield. She later moved to Springfield where she lived for many years before moving to Palmer in 2003. She was employed for many years as a gold stamper at the former Buxton Manufacturing in Agawam. She was a communicant of the former Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Springfield. She was a member of the Palmer Senior Center and enjoyed local music festivals. Most of all, she was a loving woman and a wonderful homemaker to her family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Raymond T. Bernatchez who was Called Home on July 29, 2001. They were married on November 8, 1975 at the former Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 25 years of happiness together. She leaves her loving daughter, Joyce C. Ladue of Springfield with whom she lived; her two cherished grandchildren, Scott E. Ladue and his wife, Clare, of Palmer and Jennifer R. Thompson and her husband, Ronald, of Springfield; and her two cherished great-grandchildren, Daniel Ladue and Amber Larrivee and her husband, Nick. In addition, she leaves her brother and brother-in-law both of Japan; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Bernatchez and Kayano families. Her relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. Her burial will be private for her family at Saint Michael Cemetery, Springfield. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Foundation for TJO Animals, 66 Industry Avenue, Suite 3, Springfield, MA 01104.
