Obituary

Mrs. Carolyne M. (Mandell) Cerniglia, known as Carrie by loved ones and friends, a resident of Andover and beloved wife of Peter F. Cerniglia, passed away on August 23, 2017 at 70 years young after her courageous battle with cancer.

Carrie was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on March 20, 1947. She had a vibrant and happy childhood—the eldest daughter of three, to the late Alvin and Freida (Cohen) Mandell. Carrie approached everything in life with great passion. She was at the forefront of the movement of women in the field of computer science and was employed by the US Air Force as a Cyber Security Specialist for many years. Carrie was a graduate of Newton South High School, class of 1964, and received her Bachelors degree in Math and Psychology from Boston University in 1967. She also earned her Master’s degree from Boston University in Applied Computer Science in 1975.

In her spare time, Carrie enjoyed sports and fitness activities. She met her husband of 44 years on a ski outing to Sugarbush Mountain in 1969 and they were devoted members of Cedardale Health and Fitness for over 30 years. Famous for always wanting to do “one more class”, she loved being active and prioritized a healthy lifestyle. She also enjoyed traveling, playing the piano and reading. Carrie was always interested in style and fashion and spent many happy hours shopping for herself, her family and her home. Above all, she was a loving, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. To her, family always came first. She will be dearly missed.

Besides her beloved husband, Peter, Carrie is survived by her loving children; Gregory M. and his wife Jessica (King) Cerniglia of North Chelmsford and Andrea L. Cerniglia and her husband Timothy Eickhoff of Chicago, Illinois, her siblings; Dr. Robert Mandell and his wife Jacqueline of Reading and Dr. Sue Mandell and her husband Stephen Steinbock of Richland, Washington, in-laws; Nino and AnnMarie Cerniglia, Maryann and Steven Trudeau, and Arthur Cerniglia, as well as 3 beloved grandchildren; Aurora Cerniglia and Mila and Ellister Eickhoff and many dear nieces and nephews.

Her life will be celebrated in the West Parish Garden Cemetery Chapel on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 11:30 am. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Saturday August 26 from 4-7pm. Interment will be held in the West Parish Garden Cemetery.
