New Bedford – George Anthony Avila, age 91 of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at The Jewish Convalescent Home. He was the beloved husband of the late Janet Claire (Langis) Avila and was the son of the late Sara (Connors) Almeida and John Avila.
George was born in New Bedford, MA and worked as a Machinist for Firestone Tire and Rubber. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the VFW post 1531 and Andrew Dahil Post.
He is survived by his 5 children, Dennis A. Avila of New Bedford, Christopher J. Avila and his wife, Ruth of Seldon, Long Island, NY, Anthony J. Avila, Louise M. Baptiste and her companion, Michael Correira and Melissa J. Avila all of New Bedford, his brother Arthur Avila and his wife, Maureen of Lakeville; granddaughter, Olivia M. Avila; and his good friend and companion, Juliet Silveira. He was also the father-in-law of the late, Steven Baptiste.
Flowers are welcome or donations can be made in his name to the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home.
His visiting hours will be Monday morning from 8:00-9:00 A.M. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church of Fairhaven at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow at Rural Cemetery.
