Obituary

SOUTH DARTMOUTH - Jeanne Elizabeth Hansen Kugler died in the early hours of Wednesday, August 16, in South Dartmouth, MA.

Born in Macon, GA, she was the daughter of Christian Anthony Hansen and Mary Runice Hansen. She graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1957 and Duke University in 1961 before moving to Washington DC to work at The American Scholar, a literary magazine dedicated to books, culture, and public affairs, all lifelong interests for her.

In 1964, she married Richard Cory Kugler, and together they settled in New Bedford, raising four children, Elena Sands, Elizabeth Kugler, Anne Kugler, and Richard Anthony Kugler. In 1976, she earned a Masters of Teaching degree from Brown University and later taught English at Bristol Community College. An avid reader and consummate wordsmith, she also worked as a freelancer for the university presses of Harvard and Yale, as well as a number of New York publishing houses.

Upon retirement, she moved to Westport, MA where she immersed herself in nature, recording its beauties in landscape paintings, cultivating a glorious vegetable garden, and walking the beaches and woods, always with a black lab at her side.

She is survived by a sister, Kristie Ann Hansen, of Washington DC, four children, and seven grandchildren. Her husband of 51 years, Richard Cory Kugler, died in 2016.

A private service is planned. Memorial donations may be made to the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust (dnrt.org) or the Westport Land Conservation Trust (WLCT PO Box 3975 Westport, MA 02790).
