Thomas F. "Tommy" Donahue, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at J.F.K. Memorial Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was 73 years old.
Tommy was born in Boston on September 7, 1943, a son of the late Thomas J. Donahue and Mary A. (Faye) Donahue. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School. Tommy enlisted into the United States Army on July 21, 1967 and served his country with honor, courage and faithful service to his country during the Vietnam Conflict. He was attached to the United States Army Mortuary in Saigon from 1968 to 1969. He was honorably discharged on July 1, 1973 with the rank of Specialist-4. Tommy worked for many years as manger at the old Sunnyhurst store on Main street in Charlestown. Before his retirement, Tommy also worked for over 25 years for the City of Boston in the Public Works Department. He was a member of the Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus and the Halligan Club of Charlestown. Tommy was the first recipient of the Unsung Hero Award in Charlestown in 1990 and Mayor of Charlestown in 1995.
Tommy is the devoted father of Kimberley Cardone, Thomas Angelo and William Donahue. He is the loving Grandpa to Sebastian, Vincent, Sean and Sophia. He is the lifelong companion of Helen Garafano. He is the beloved brother of Kevin Donahue and his wife Ellen and the late Arlene R. Donahue and James T. Donahue and his surviving wife Josephine. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Tommy's Funeral Mass on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 9:30 A.M. in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown. His burial is private. There are no funeral home visiting hours.
