Obituary

Carl H. Mayland

Auburn- Carl H. Mayland, longtime resident of Auburn, NH, passed away August 7, 2017 at his home following a period of declining health. He was 85 years old.

He was born on August 13, 1931 the son of Valdemar and Jenny (Rasmussen) Mayland in Dearborn, Michigan. Early on, a happenstance meeting between a young Carl and auto magnate Henry Ford had him attending first through twelfth grades at Mr. Ford’s Greenfield Village Schools in the Edison Institute at Dearborn. He was a good student, was self-supporting from the age of 11, and excelled in track and field during high school.

After graduating in 1949, he began his journey toward a degree in business from Wayne State University. His college career was interrupted when he enlisted in the US Navy when the Korean War began. He quickly rose to the enlisted rank of Petty Officer 1st Class before returning to Dearborn to marry his first wife, Shirley Brown, continue his studies and provide for his growing family as a sales agent for Remington Rand. After marketing, programming, and working with early Univac computers, he opened his own billing and service bureau which he ran until its sale in 1962. He then joined Ford Motor Company and attained increasingly responsible positions—culminating as manager of the Ford Computer Operations Center.

While on a hunting trip to Northern Quebec he met his second wife Nancy Allen of Auburn, New Hampshire. After he retired from Ford Motor in 1987, they moved to Auburn, began clearing land and built their own home. He came to love Auburn as his “new home town.” At the age of 60, he and Nancy established Viking Oil Company which they ran until turning the reins over to his son, John in 2006. He and Nancy always loved to travel and now they were able to spend more time travelling the world; including numerous trips to Denmark, the country of his heritage.

Throughout his life, Carl loved to camp, build, hunt, fish and “hold court” whenever and wherever two or more would meet. He was particularly fond of “giving back” as he did with many organizations; most notably the Boy Scouts of America. Committee Chairman, Assistant Scout Master, Scout Master and District Commissioner were just a few of his positions. The BSA recognized his achievements with the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service and accomplishment. Carl was also a Mason, member of the Danish Brotherhood and the Auburn Historical Association. He also greatly enjoyed being Santa at every opportunity.

Carl will be sorely missed by all who knew him as well as the organizations to which he contributed countless hours and donations. He is survived by his wife Nancy, a daughter Nancy Fox and husband Randy, a son John Mayland and wife Debbie; grandchildren Christopher Fox and wife Ashley, Ryan Fox, Nicole Romstadt and husband John, Jonathon Mayland and Alexander Mayland. He leaves behind one great grandchild Wyatt Romstadt, as well as many great friends (both in the US and in Denmark), school chums and his first wife Shirley.

A memorial reception will take place on Friday, August 18, 2017 from 4 to 7 pm at J. N. Boufford & Sons Funeral Home, 110 Bridge St, Manchester, NH.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 11 am in First Congregational Church, corner of Union and Hanover St, Manchester, NH.
