Obituary

SOMERSET – George Thomas Costa, age 73 of Somerset, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 7, 2017 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Diane M. (Talbot) Costa and the son of Lucy (Mathias) Costa and the late Simeon “Sam” Costa. He was a US Navy Veteran having served on the USS Petrel (ASR-14) Chanticleer-class submarine rescue ship. He was also a parishioner of St. Louis de France Church, a member of the Am. Legion Post No. 0228 of Somerset, V.F.W., the Knight of Columbus, Fr. J. Boehr Council of Tiverton, and the Newport County Retired Teachers Association.

George began his 34 year career in 1965 as a teacher in Pocasset Elementary School, then went to Tiverton Middle as a teacher and in 1990 he became their principal for several years. He then served as principal for both Fort Barton School & Nonquit School until his retirement in 1999.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his two sons: Russell P. Costa (wife Elena) of Swansea and Ryan T. Costa (wife Dawn) of Somerset; his brother: Stephen P. Costa (wife Nancy) of Plymouth; beloved grandchildren: Justin, Zachary, Sean, Alex, & Jamie Costa; several nieces & nephews. He was the brother of the late Paul Costa.

His funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Inc. 1521 N. Main St. Fall River on Saturday at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Louis de France Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery.
