…U.S.M.C. Korean War Veteran, C.P.A.; 89
TEWKSBURY - Mrs. Dorothy Anne (Durant) Brown, age 89, a former longtime Tewksbury resident, died peacefully Sunday afternoon, August 6, at Methuen’s Holy Family Hospital, after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife for fifty-two years of James E. Brown Jr., who died in 2008.
She was born in Boston, in August 1929, one of five children of the late David and Mary (Cutter) Durant, and was raised in Medford. After her marriage, she moved to Tewksbury to raise her four sons. She retired to New Hampshire in 1999.
During her years in Tewksbury, she was an active communicant of St. William’s Church, and an active member of the Tewksbury Senior Center.
At age twenty, she enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and served stateside during the Korean War. She was honorably discharged as a Sergeant, and earned the National Defense and Good Conduct Medals. She was a member of the Women’s Marine Association, and was a former Treasurer of the Tewksbury D.A.V. Post 110.
She began her career as an accountant with the City Of Medford, and would later earn her Bachelors Degree in Accounting from Bentley College. She became a C.P.A. and worked in Lexington and later for the Monk Manufacturing Company.
She leaves her four sons, James E. Brown III and his wife Joanne (Peltonovich) of Sandown, David J. Brown of Dracut, Timothy P. Brown and his wife Maria (DaSilva) of Farmingham, NH, Daniel G. Brown of Methuen; five grandsons; five granddaughters; one great grandson; one great granddaughter; and was predeceased by her siblings, Mildred Stanton, Louise, David and Sonny Durant.
Visiting hours Thursday, Aug. 10, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. Her funeral will begin Friday at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass Friday, August 11, at 10:00 a.m. in St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St. (Rte. 38) Tewksbury. Burial with U.S.M.C. Honors will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery.
