Obituary

Heffernan, Betty of West Roxbury died August 5th surrounded by her loving family.  Betty was born in Boston on July 7th, 1917 and recently had a joyous celebration of her 100th Birthday. She worked for the Army Corp of Engineers during WWII and volunteered her services with the USO.  She also had a 40 year career with the City of Boston, retiring from the School Department in 1982. Betty was an avid reader. She lived to see 18 presidents during her lifetime and had a keen interest in politics and government. Her enthusiasm for politics started at an early age when president Calvin Coolidge visited her home.  She loved music, dance and traveling with friends and family.

Betty was a kind person who treated everyone with love and respect.   She lived unpretentiously and found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including spending time with her "babes". Betty is survived by her nieces Kathie Deady of Green Harbor, Maureen Gibbons of Stoughton, Nancy Fitzgerald of Quincy, Joan Cotrone of Hanover, Patti Hoxie of Green Harbor, Paula Autori of Walpole, Marybeth Monahan of Hanover and a nephew Paul Heffernan of Sewickley, Pa.  She also dearly loved their spouses and her 17 grand nieces and nephews and 19 great grand nieces and nephews, and all her extended family and friends. A funeral Mass for Betty will be celebrated at 11:30 AM on Wednesday August 9th at St. Theresa of Avila Church in West Roxbury. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty's memory may be made to Queen Ann Nursing Home, Hingham MA.
