Obituary

CHICOPEE – Doris R. (Fontaine) Carney, 93, a longtime resident of Paradise Street in the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, August 3, 2017. She passed into Eternal Life at Heritage Hall West in Agawam surrounded by all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born at home at Ames Avenue in Chicopee on September 28, 1923, a beloved daughter of the late Alcide and Bertha (Tanguay) Fontaine. She was raised in Chicopee, graduated from Saint Joan of Arc Grammar School in Aldenville and Cathedral High School in Springfield and was a lifelong resident of Chicopee. Before her marriage, she was employed as an Administrative Clerk at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee where she met her future husband, Joseph. Following their marriage, she became a stay at home mom to raise their family. Doris was an avid Red Sox fan and was always ready to watch a good game. During her leisure time, she enjoyed family gatherings, going to local plays and vacations at Hampton Beach and Cape Cod. Most of all, she loved being a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Joseph L. Carney who was Called Home on February 15, 1980. They were married on November 17, 1945 at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville and were blessed with 34 years of happiness together. She leaves her two loving sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald J. Carney and his wife, Claire, of West Springfield and John A. Carney and his wife, Nancy, of Feeding Hills; her eight cherished grandchildren, Christine Crowell and her husband, Kevin, Kimberly Renaud and her husband, William, Andrew Carney, Jeffrey Carney, Daniel Carney, Michael Carney and his wife, Erin, Bryan Carney and Lisa Carney; her six cherished great-grandchildren, Benjamin Crowell, Allyssa Renaud, Gianni Renaud, Liam Drost, Trenton Carney and Valerie Carney; her two dear brothers, Leonard Fontaine and Edward Fontaine; her two dear sisters, Claire Dugre and her husband, Clement and Pauline Bourque; her dear brother-in-law and three dear sisters-in-law, Napoleon Rougeau, Shirley Fontaine, Donna Fontaine and Eileen Gosselin; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Carney and Fontaine families. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by four dear brothers, Rene, Paul, Gerald and Donald Fontaine; her two dear sisters, Lorraine Gosselin and Rita Rougeau; her two dear brothers-in-law and her four dear sisters-in-law, Edward Gosselin, Gerald Bourque, Peggy Fontaine, Mary Ann Fontaine, Louise Fontaine and Aline Fontaine. Her funeral will be held on Thursday morning, August 10, 2017 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee.
