Obituary

BUXTON - Robert Scott Garland, age 49, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2017, at his home surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Robert was born in Winchester, Massachusetts on November 27, 1967, a son of Roland Garland and Gayle (Garland) Gaston. After graduating from Bonny Eagle High School he went on to work 7 years as a janitor at McDonalds in South Portland.

Robert was a gentle soul with the mind of a child. He always expected hugs from everyone and if you forgot he would definitely let you know.

He loved fishing more than anything. He could often be seen peddling his bicycle to the brook, wicker creel tied to the handlebars, fishing pole in one hand and a container of big, juicy worms. Robert also enjoyed the ice fishing tournaments on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire, with his dad, Roland, and brother, Jimmy.

Robert liked the hobby of model trains. At one point he had an N scale train track that ran above his bed. Recently he spent a fun day with his father taking a ride on a narrow gauge train in Portland, ME.

Halloween and Christmas were Robert's favorite holidays. Trick or treaters were greeted by white, wispy ghosts floating from the trees, sticky spider webs clinging to every corner, and the sound of creepy haunted house screams, moans and creaks. Robert loved trick or treating as much as he loved Halloween decorating. He was a regular at neighborhood doors every year with his homemade costume and bag for collecting candy.

At Christmas time Robert took great pleasure in decorating his room. His tabletop Charlie Brown tree was wrapped in sparkling tinsel garland, shiny multicolored balls, and twinkling, bright Christmas lights.

Robert is survived by his father- Roland Garland and stepmother, Wilma of Center Harbor, New Hampshire; his mother- Gayle (Garland) Gaston and stepfather, Robert Gaston Sr. of Buxton; sister- Cheryl Mitchell and husband, Roger of Phillips; brother- James Garland and wife, Rena of Acme, Pennsylvania; brother- Richard Garland and wife, Ann of Turner; and numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces.
