New Bedford – Joseph G. Sylvia Sr., age 89 of New Bedford, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017 at Sacred Heart Nursing Home. He was the beloved husband of the late Lydia (Sylvia) Sylvia and was the son of the late Rosa (Cotta) and Manuel G. Sylvia.
Joseph was born in New Bedford, MA and was active as an umpire at the GNB Little League until 1974. He retired from Borg Warner Manufacturing and also worked at Mickey Madan. He was a dedicated member of the Holy Name of Sacred Heart Couples Club as well as the Holy Name’s Senior’s Club. Joe along with his late wife, Lydia, worked numerous years at D & D Catering. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his 4 children, Joseph G. Sylvia Jr., and his wife Christine of Dartmouth, Ronald Sylvia of North Smithfield, RI, David Sylvia and his wife, Carol of East Wareham and Christopher Sylvia and his wife, Jane of New Bedford; 8 grandchildren, Jamie, Jeffery, Joelle, Jodi, Melissa, Mallory, Drew and Paige; 8 great-grandchildren, Abigail, Colby, Zachary, Charlotte, Catherine, Jameson, Addyson and Avery. He was the father of the late R. Sylvia and was predeceased by 6 siblings.
The family of Mr. Sylvia would like to thank the staff at Sacred Heart Nursing Home in New Bedford for the attentive care they gave to him during his residency, especially, the staff at 2 PY.
His visiting hours will be held Thursday evening from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Friday beginning in the funeral home at 7:45A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
