Hugo C. “Tex” Sweeney
Retired Boston Firefighter

Hanson - Hugo C. “Tex” Sweeney, formerly of Dorchester and Angleton, Texas, answering the call of God at age 95, Hugo entered into eternal peace on Friday July 21. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary L. (Shea) Sweeney.

He was the devoted father of William J. Sweeney and his wife Jan of Plymouth, Richard H. Sweeney and his wife Eva of Middleboro, Thomas A. Sweeney and his wife Donna of Canton, John D. Sweeney and his wife Lisa of Whitman, and the late Robert C. and James E. Sweeney. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Carl Sweeney of Sweeny, TX.

Born in Sweeny, Texas and brought up in Angleton, Texas, Hugo was raised as Hugo Wallin by his mother’s family.

Hugo had joined the Coast Guard in 1939, and served for the duration of WWII doing mostly submarine and convoy duty on the Greenland Patrol.

During the war, Hugo met his beloved wife Mary in Boston and later settled there. He was a retired and proud member of the Boston Fire Department, having served most of his duty assignment with Ladder 18 in South Boston.

He was a member of the Boston Firefighters Union, Local 718, the International Association of Firefighters, the Coast Guard Combat Veterans, the VFW and the American Legion.

Family and friends are invited to attend his services to be held Wednesday July 26 at 9:30 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Garden of Gethsemane Cemetery, West Roxbury. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday July 25 from 4:00-8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Old Colony Hospice, 321 Manley Street, West Bridgewater, MA 02379
