Obituary

Sylvestre Auguste was born in Lacroix Perisse, Gonaives, on February 23, 1923. The son of Hugo Auguste and Sylvina Sylvestre, he was orphaned at the age of 14, forcing him to leave school and join the job market in order to make a living. Later, he enlisted in the Armed Forces of Haiti (FADH), where he made a brief military career.

In the year of 1943, he married Marguerite Octama. From this union eleven children were born – five boys and six girls. Sadly, in 1995, he lost his wife after 45 years of a wonderful and loving marriage.

A hardworking man, he was employed by the Haitian State as an assistant Agronomist at the Agricultural Development and Industrial Institute (IDAI). He stayed in this position for 30 years. In addition to being a great farmer, he worked as a Volunteer collaborator (colvol) within the National Service (SNEM), dedicating his time to malaria eradication.

From this State body, Sylvestre Auguste received prestigious distinctions for his dedication, his seriousness, and his knowledge. He was recognized for his due diligence and, especially, for his generous and voluntary contribution to the reduction of the number of cases of malaria and of deaths related to the complications of the disease.

A faithful and devoted man of God, he converted to the Christian faith in 1953, receiving his call to the Ministry within that same year. He founded and became the leader of Beraca Baptist Church in Lacroix Perisse in the same year. Through his work in the church, he influenced and prepared several generations of men and women in the Lord's Vineyard.

Sylvestre devoted tremendous time and energy, to his church for almost fifty years. In 2001, he left Haiti to be united with his son, Daniel, in Norwood, Massachusetts. The beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend and colleague died on Sunday, 16 July 2017, after a short illness which he courageously fought.

Funeral Services will be held in the First Baptist Church of Norwood, 71 Bond St. Norwood on Friday, July 21st from 6:30-8:30pm.

The funeral of this tested man of faith will be held on Thursday, July 27 at 6:30 am in the morning at the Evangelical Baptist church of Hatt, in Delmas 31, #1 Angle Hatt 4 & 7, Haiti. The burial of my dad’s remains will take place in Lacroix Perisse Cemetery (a rural community from Gonaives, Haiti). Blessed be the name of the Lord!

In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Haiti Mission trip at: 33 Press Ave, Norwood 02062.
