Obituary

Georgena LeAnna, 71, of Ledyard passed away peacefully on July 16, at home after a 15-year battle with thyroid cancer.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, on June 30, 1946, she was the daughter of the late William (Bill) and Georgena (Ena) (Hostettler) String.

She worked for many years in Disbursing at the Naval Underwater Sound Lab in New London. She was very active in the wife's activities for several submarines. She especially enjoyed her job at Ledyard High School as one of the "milk ladies" in the 1990's. The sound of her cowbell rings in the memory of many Ledyard football players, since she was an avid supporter of them on the Ledyard High School Booster Club. And even though she enjoyed all these things nothing made her as happy as being a mother and especially a grandmother. Although she passed away in Ledyard, her spirit will live forever in Hawaii, her favorite place on Earth, as well as in the hearts of many.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Myron (Lee). They were married at Saint Augustine's Church, Canterbury, CT, on June 5, 1971. She will also be deeply missed by her daughter, Caroline (Carrie) and her husband Brian Taughinbaugh of York, PA and her son Myron Jr. and his wife Megan of Norwich. She is also survived by her brothers Bill String of Ledyard and Charles String and his wife Laurie of Plainfield, as well as her beloved grandchildren Zachary and Caitlin Taughinbaugh, and Jaelyn and Keagan LeAnna. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. She is predeceased by her niece Heather String.

Georgena's family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, July 29, from 12 to 2:00pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. Immediately following services, the family will be accepting visitors at 36 Avery St, Norwich. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Saint Jude's Children's Hospital.
