Obituary

James Bixler "Jim" Clayton, 79, of Tifton passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Legacy Village in Tifton. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Tifton with the Rev. Lonnie Lacy officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 18, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service in the Parish Hall at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Tifton.

Born September 29, 1937 in Lake City, Florida, Mr. Clayton was the son of the late Bixler Hampton Clayton and Margaret Sansbury Clayton. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert John Clayton. He graduated from Suwannee High School in Live Oak, Florida and earned a baseball scholarship to Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois, where he graduated with a BBA degree.

He owned JJ's Men's Clothing Store in Downtown Tifton and taught middle school 7th grade Math in the Tift County School System for 20 years. He also coached middle school football and basketball and Tift County High School tennis.

He was a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Tifton, where he was frequently the host and reader. He loved growing up in Live Oak, Florida on the Suwannee River and had lived in Tifton since 1976.

He was the voice of the Blue Devils, announcing Tift County High School football games for 40 years. He had a good speaking voice, which led him to emcee many local events. He served for six years in the United States Army Reserve.

Mr. Clayton is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ann Milledge Clayton of Tifton; his children and their spouses, Susan Clayton Rockett of Douglas, James Byron and Julia Clayton and John Bixler and Bailey Clayton, all of Louisville, Kentucky; his step-children and their spouses, Heather and John Stripling and Heidi and Robert Massey, all of Tifton and John Bert IV and Suzan Prince of Valdosta; one sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Vince Camp of Lake City, Florida; and numerous grandchildren and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Jim's memory to St. Anne's Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 889, Tifton, GA 31793.
