Obituary

Mr. Merrell Langdon Stout, Jr. of Augusta, GA and Boca Grande, FL died at his home in Augusta on Tuesday, July 4, 2017. His wife of 54 years and his three children were with him when he died. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Stout, known to friends and family as Donnie, was born in Baltimore, MD where he attended Calvert School, Gilman School and spent summers on the Chesapeake Bay at Gibson Island. He was a graduate of Philips Academy, Andover in 1954 and Duke University in 1958. At Duke he played lacrosse, was captain of the wrestling team, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

After college, he was commissioned as a Naval Officer serving on both minesweepers and destroyers in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. After leaving the Navy, Mr. Stout moved back to Baltimore to begin a career as a commercial banker. In 1979, after a successful 20-year career as a banker in Baltimore and Miami, Mr. Stout moved to Augusta, GA and became a Burger King Franchisee, until his retirement in 2006.

Mr. Stout was asked to serve on the Board of various organizations including: The American Red Cross, SunTrust Bank of Augusta, Augusta Preparatory School, Camp Merrie-Woode, and The Boy Scouts of America.

Above all, his family was his priority. Throughout his career he had standing instructions at his office that he was always to be interrupted whenever his family called or stopped by for a visit.

Mr. Stout always showed kindness and respect in his dealings with others. He was a true gentleman. In the rare event he encountered conflict, he would deal with it head-on and yet always seemed to emerge with everyone on good terms.

When not raising a family, growing a business, or serving his community, he loved to go deep sea fishing. In October of 1987 he fulfilled a lifelong dream by catching a 1,000-pound black marlin off Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Mr. Stout is survived by his wife, Barry, daughters, Barry Stout Kaminer (Jim), Anne Stout Hughes (Jeff), and son Merrell Langdon Stout, III (Louise); grandchildren, Wright, Heath, Cooper and Andrew Kaminer, Will and Sarah Hughes, Langdon and Charlie Stout. He was predeceased by his mother, Helen Scarlett Stout, by his father, Dr. Merrell Langdon Stout, and by his brother, Charles Langdon Stout.
