Obituary

Mrs. Jean Rae Smith, 94, beloved wife of 63 years of the late Dr. C. Conrad Smith, entered into rest on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at her residence.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 3, 2017 at Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Stu Ritter officiating.

Mrs. Smith was born in Augusta to the late Louis Ingalls Rae and Lois Abernathy Rae. She was a graduate of Tubman High School for Girls. Mrs. Smith was a long time member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and served as past president of the Women of Covenant Presbyterian Church. The church also presented her with the Honorary Life Membership Award. Mrs. Smith served on the Woman’s Board at University Hospital for many years and also volunteered for many charitable organizations over the years. She was a member and held office in the Richmond County Medical Auxiliary, the Camellia Garden Club, and the Augusta Council of Garden Clubs. She was also a member of the Augusta Junior Woman’s Club, the Augusta Country Club, Historic Augusta, the Augusta Museum of History, and the friends of the Augusta Library. But most of all she will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her children, Gail Smith Baker, Stephen Knapp Smith, Barry Ingalls Smith (DeRee), and Joel Rae Smith (Kimberly); her daughter-in-law, Marion Durden Smith; her six grandchildren, Elizabeth Baker Weckel, A. Hinton Baker, III, Marion Smith Lemarr (Adam), Jean-Marie Smith, Courtney W. Smith, and Barry I. Smith, Jr.; her five great-grandchildren, Hannah Weckel, Melody Weckel, Mari Eason Lemarr, Helen Lemarr, and Jack Lemarr; and her niece and nephew, Joanne E. Saelens and Michael Lloyd Rae. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her son, C. Conrad Smith, Jr.; her sister, Elizabeth Rae Saelens; her brother, Lloyd A. Rae; and her son-in-law, Hinton Baker, Jr.

The family would like to thank her caregiver Pamela Boyd, for her loving care and devotion.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening, July 2, 2017 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.
