Obituary

Grover C. “Junior” Broome, Jr., 87, of Irwin County, Georgia, died Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Palemon Gaskins Memorial Nursing Home in Ocilla.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, in Ocilla, with the Rev. Steven Boyles officiating. Cindy Glow will give the eulogy. Interment will follow in Ocilla Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.

Mr. Broome was born February 24, 1930, in Monroe, North Carolina, to the late Grover C. & Nellie Petty Broome. He attended school at Riverbend and worked on a ranch in Texas. Mr. Broome served his country honorably in the United States Army, 6th Division, B Battery. He worked in citrus harvesting in Florida and later moved to Valdosta and lived on Twin Lakes. He was a painter and helped during the construction of Moody Air Force Base. He later began working for himself and painted throughout south Georgia. He loved fishing, traveling, and gardening and had a special affinity for collecting arrowheads and artifacts. Mr. Broome was a Christian and is now residing in the household of Jesus.

He is survived by his best friend and caretaker of over 30 years, Lorena Cayna Slater of Irwin County; seven nieces: Janet & Wallace Peacock of Fitzgerald, Peggy Hull of Minneola, Florida, Linda Andrews, Gail Cox, and Norma Frashure, all of Jacksonville, Florida, Debra Booth of Montezuma, and Avanel Gibbs of Sparks; a nephew, Michael Booth of Jacksonville, Florida; along with many great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Volner Broome and his 12 brothers and sisters.
