Obituary

Robert J. Cassidy, 79, of Smithfield passed away after a long battle with cancer. He is the husband of Jean M. Cassidy.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Francis and Alice (Mulcahey) Cassidy. Bob was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having attained the rank of Sergeant. Bob had graduated Cum Laude from Salve Regina College with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, and from the Command Training Institute in Babson College. Bob retired from the Providence Police Department as a Detective Sergeant, having received over twenty commendations. He was selected as R.I. Police Officer of the year in 1984.

He was also a faithful member of the Providence Police Association, as well as the Providence F.O.P and the Smithfield Elks. Bob was a communicant at St. Michael’s Church, Smithfield.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, and two sons, Gregg Cassidy of Foster who works as a senior Environmental Planner with the RI DEM and Glenn Cassidy, who retired from the Providence Police as a Detective Sergeant and currently works with the Glocester Police Department, and his wife, Brenda of Glocester, as well as his grandchildren, Emily, Holly and Hunter and his sister, Trisha Kretz of Long Island, New York. Robert is predeceased by his step-mother, Vera Cassidy, his brothers Francis and Thomas, and his sister, Alice Downs.

His funeral will be held Saturday at 8am from the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Home, Rt. 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial at 9am in St. Michael’s Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Smithfield. Burial will follow in Acote’s Hill Cemetery, Chepachet. Visitation Friday 4-7pm.
