CLOUGHERTY, Edward V. Ph.D. of West Roxbury. Age 86. June 16, 2017. Beloved husband of Mary F. (Pizziferri) Clougherty for 63 years. Devoted father of Edward C. Clougherty of Weston, FL., Keith P. Clougherty of Southwest Ranches, FL, and Lydia Alyce and her husband Owen Jones of Nashville, TN. Grandfather of Kali Clougherty, Shane Clougherty and Kelty Rayne Jones. Brother of Alfred and his wife Joan Clougherty of PA, Leo and his wife Marie Clougherty of Boynton Beach, FL and the late Coleman Clougherty. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Dr. Clougherty was department chemist for the Boston Fire Department for over 30 years and an adjunct professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Department of Fire Protection Engineering. He was dedicated to the protection and safety of firefighters and the citizens of Boston. He was a pioneer in fire safety and materials analysis, and instrumental in safety clothing that firefighters have worn all over the world. He was the author of numerous fire safety standards, codes and articles. He also served in the U.S. Army.
He is a graduate of Boston College, Class of 1952, and received his Masters and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Boston University.
Funeral from the P.E. Murray & F.J. Higgins, George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 2000 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA. Wednesday June 21, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in Holy Name Church, West Roxbury at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours Tuesday June 20, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Internment St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
