Obituary

NATICK: Joseph Patrick McDermott, age 94, a longtime South Natick resident, died peacefully Tuesday evening, June 6, 2017. He was surrounded by his loving family at the home of his daughter, Mary Jean.

Born, raised, and educated in Watertown, he was a son of the late Patrick J. and Mary (McGuire) McDermott. Joe was a graduate of Saint Patrick’s School in Watertown. He entered the Navy in 1942 and served as a Quartermaster 3rd Class until 1946. Joe graduated from Harvard University in 1947 and later earned a Master of Education from Boston University.

Joe married the former Mary Theresa Bransfield in 1953, and the couple made their home in South Natick. A high school math teacher, Joe began his career in 1947 at the Portsmouth Priory School. He taught at Natick High School and Watertown High until a thirty-two year stint as department head at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough. He retired after forty-six years of teaching in 1993.

A daily Communicant at Saint Patrick’s Church until his health failed, Joe and his family had been active parishioners of Sacred Heart Church in South Natick until its closing. Very much a family oriented man, he was ever attentive to his children and their families and relished being “Joe” to his much loved grandchildren.

Predeceased by Mary in 2012, and their eldest, John, in 2013, Joe is survived by four sons and two daughters, Edward McDermott of Worcester, Mary Jean McDermott and her husband David Welch of Holliston, Joseph McDermott and his wife Suzanne of Hopedale, Daniel McDermott of Leominster, Gerald McDermott of Natick, and Elizabeth Maisey and her husband John of Holliston; his daughter-in-law, Lena Jessup of Holliston; 12 grandchildren, Emily, Zachary, Patrick, Ryan, Conor, Katie, Joe, Maria, Rose, Mary, Julia, and Caroline; his brother, Thomas McDermott and his wife Mary Louise of Watertown; his sister, Marion Cote and her husband Paul of Belmont, and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Eileen, Francis, and John McDermott.
