Steven Mitchell Sumner, 55, of Omega passed away Friday, June 2, 2017, at his sister’s residence in Omega. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2017, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Paul Brewer officiating. Mr. Sumner will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmie Hinson officiating and eulogies given by Mike Nichols, Brian McDonald and Jimmy Allen. The family will receive friends Monday, June 5, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Matthew Palmer, Will Willis, Jake Robinson, Christian Sumner, Everett Rowan, Nathan Lane, Jones Woody and Aubrey Sumner will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the board members of Quality Growers Gin and Peanut Company in Omega, employees of Steve Sumner Farms, Jimmy Allen, Jamie Allen, Dake Boling, Brian McDonald, Mike Nichols, Kent Hamilton, Joel Watson, David Sumner, Gene Hinson, Tim Sumner, Wendell Sumner, Michael Ivey, C. R. Thompson, Frank McClendon, Ed Walker, Bill Brim, Ronnie Joe Sumner, Darrell Waites, Glenn Willis, Tommy Stone, Dwight Sumner, Terry Pafford and Charles Sumner.
Born February 2, 1962 in Tifton, Mr. Sumner was the son of Mary Hinson Sumner of Omega and the late Rudolph Sumner. He was presently serving as Vice President of the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Association and was a partner in Quality Growers Gin and Peanut Company in Omega. In high school, he was very involved in the Future Farmers of America Club.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Sumner is survived by two sons, Stephen Sumner of Indiana and Thomas Sumner of Omega; their mother, Tabitha Sumner of Indiana; two sisters and one brother-in-law, June and Ken Ponder and Becky Sumner, all of Omega; one granddaughter, Charleigh Sumner; and a niece, Elisabeth Ponder Puryear and husband, Zach.
