Benny Moon passed away on May 22, 2017 surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife and partner in life and business for 71 years, Marion Fincher Moon; daughters Jan McInnes and Marion “Dusty” Avery and his sons-in-law David Avery and Fleming McInnes, who he loved like sons; and his beloved sister Cleo Choate. He was the proud and loving grandfather of Ryan Avery Davis (Joe Peck), Benjamin Avery, Kimberly McInnes, Mary McInnes and Holly McInnes. He was forever grateful to his two great friends and employees who helped him run his business for over 40 years, Susan Brown and Tom Wiggins. And he is survived by his “buddy” Josephine, their 16 year old poodle who he dearly loved.
Benny, also known as Ben, was born in Loganville, Georgia on November 18, 1928 to Herschel and Myrtie Moon. Having only gone to school through the 8th grade and leaving home at 14, he truly was a self-made man. His first job was delivering for a drug store in downtown Atlanta on his bicycle. He then began selling ladies shoes for Holiday Shoe store on Peachtree Street and in Lenox Square, at which time he also served in the National Guard. Benny became a member of Yaarab Shrine Masters Lodge 295 in 1969 and was a member for 48 years.
His entrepreneurial spirit led him into the salvage business, which he turned into a successful retail furniture business in and around Atlanta. In 1963, Benny and Marion opened what became known as Castleberry’s Treasures For Your Home. With the help of many wonderful employees, furniture reps and loyal customers for 48 years, they furnished homes all over Georgia. The “country boy” as he would refer to himself, earned the respect of the furniture manufacturers and business leaders through his integrity and determination to offer quality furniture at the lowest possible price to his customers.
For the past 36 years, Benny and Marion divided their time between the Atlanta area and Boynton Beach, Florida where they have many friends. While Benny was learning the furniture business, he was also teaching himself to play golf, which he did quite well. He was a founding member of Dunwoody Country Club in Atlanta and a board member of Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach and was also member of several of the Reynolds Plantation courses in Greensboro, Georgia. He played in many charity and pro-am tournaments over the years, was a member of the Southern Seniors Golf Association and the International Seniors Golf Association. He and Marion were fortunate to travel all over the world, often with golf clubs in tow. But few things made him happier than playing golf with his grandson Benjamin.
Even though he was born very poor, he always considered himself a rich man. Never lacking in confidence, he would often say “never let anyone upset your peace of mind.” And, as far as anyone knew, no one ever upset his. He was generous to friends and family and always looked for and expected the best from everyone. Even in his last days, he kept his smile and since of humor.
The family would like to thank his loving care givers, Carol and Cynthia and the staff at Brandon Wilde, and particularly those in the Arbor who cared for him during his most difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Georgia Health Sciences Foundation – Neurology Alzheimer’s Fund, 1120 15th St., Augusta, GA 30912. Funeral services will be held at noon, Thursday, May 25 at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. The family is asking men attending the funeral to wear golf shirts in recognition of what the game of golf meant to Benny.
