Obituary

John H. Terry, 94, of Salem, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by his family. He was the devoted husband of Alice (Michaud) Akatyszewski Terry with whom he had shared 15 years of marriage. He was also the husband of the late Juanita (Ouellette) Terry with whom he had shared 43 years of marriage.

Born in Beverly and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late Edward C. and Elizabeth (O’Brien) Terry. John was a Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served two enlistments overseas with the Navy as a Radioman. Following his honorable discharge in 1952 he returned to Salem and began working as a machinist for the United Shoe Machine Corp. in Beverly. He retired with 40 years service with the USMC.

John enjoyed spending time with his families, vacationing, reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cribbage, dancing and eating ice cream. He was a kind and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his devoted wife Alice, he is survived by his sons, Mark J. Terry and his wife Maryann of Salem, Brian J. Terry and his wife Cheryl of Hampton, NH, his daughter, Deborah J. Pierce and her husband Stephen of Carrabassett, ME, his sister, Carol Cudmore and her husband Thomas of Salem, three grandchildren; Diana L. Lombard and her fiancée Tomo Zargaj, & Derek J. Terry both of Salem, April Guttadauro and her husband Jae of Danvers, four great-grandchildren, Shamus P & Brendan E. Lombard both of Salem, Cooper & Logan Guttadauro both of Danvers as well as nieces and nephews. He also leaves his step- sons and daughters, Robert Akatyszewski and his wife Laura of Effingham, NH, Richard Akatyszewski and his wife Shelly of Hollis, NH, Debra Nearing and her husband Bruce of N. Reading, Patricia Rutkowski and her husband Henry of Salem, John Akatyszewski and his wife Pattie of Salem, Carol Julien and her husband Scott of Danvers, and step-grandchildren, James, Markus, Ava & Valerie Akatyszewski, Kathryn & Jonathan Rutkowski, Jennifer Arcuri and her husband Scott, Johanni & Katalina Manon, Caitlin, Emily & Christopher Nearing, Diana Sanborn of Somersworth, NH and great-granddaughters, Cassidy Akatyszewski and Anna Sanborn ofNH. He was predeceased by his brother Edward Terry and sisters, Elizabeth Pacelko, Alice Gonyea and Nancy Belisle.

Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral mass at Ste. Anne Church, 290 Jefferson Ave., Salem on Friday, May 26, 2017 at 11:00 AM to be followed by his burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be on Thursday, May 25th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
