Obituary

Robert (“Bob”) F. Seymour, age 91, passed away on Thursday surrounded by his family. He was a longtime resident of Chicopee. Robert was born in West Springfield on October 26, 1925, a son of the late Fred and Margaret (Lynch) Seymour. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Ruth E. (Labine) Seymour, his loving daughters, Irene Seymour of Chicopee and Laurette (Seymour) Wenman and her husband Thomas of Illinois. Robert also leaves behind his sister, Dorothy (Seymour) Kennedy and his nieces and nephews, Catherine, Jane and Edward Kennedy, Brent and Sherri Ehlenberger, and his grandson Benjamin Webber. Robert was predeceased by his brother-in-law, James Kennedy, his sister-in-law Jean Marie (Labine) Ehlenberger and her husband John, and his niece Annmarie (Kennedy) Bredenbeck and nephew James Kennedy. Robert was a proud World War II Veteran, enlisting in the Navy in 1943 at age 17. He was assigned to the Heavy Cruiser, U.S.S. Canberra (CA-70) and saw extensive combat action in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of War. On October 13, 1944, while in heavy enemy air attacks off the coast of Formosa the U.S.S. Canberra was attacked by five enemy planes. Three enemy planes were shot down by the Canberra, two were shot down by the U.S.S. Hornet. One enemy plane released an aerial torpedo that hit the U.S.S. Canberra and 25 men were killed from the resulting torpedo damage. The ship was crippled and unable to continue with the Navy task force. His ship, along with other crippled ships and two escorts were used in an attempt to bait the Japanese Navy. He was awarded many medals for his valor and courage, including the Asiatic-Pacific medal with 6 battle stars, a Navy combat action ribbon, Good conduct medal, and a WWII Victory medal. At the completion of his military service, Robert returned to Western Massachusetts and worked many years at Westinghouse Corporation, Purolator and American Bosch (United Technologies). He was an avid reader and sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots as well as the WNBA league and Connecticut Women’s Huskies Basketball team. Visiting hours will be held on Monday May 22, 2017 from 9-10 AM at the Grise Funeral Home 280 Springfield St. Chicopee with a Prayer Service to begin at 10 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow with Military Honors at the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Robert's memory. Wounded Warrior Family Support mission is to provide to the families of those who have been wounded, injured or killed during combat operations. They have helped over 100.000 veterans.
