Obituary

Thedessia "Sis" Heys Dorminey, 80, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Saturday, May 13, 2017, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Monday, May 15, 2017, at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. B.J. Funk officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until the funeral hour in the sanctuary on Monday.

Sis Dorminey was born September 10, 1936 in Fitzgerald, Georgia to the late Thedessia Robitzsch & William Bates Heys. She spent her childhood years in Moultrie before moving back to Fitzgerald in Junior High. She graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1954 where she was a majorette, played basketball, and was voted cutest senior. After high school, she attended Bessie Tift College in Forsyth for one year. She then moved to Atlanta and worked at Delta Airlines before relocating to Statesboro to attend Georgia Teachers College, now known as Georgia Southern University. She earned a degree in Home Economics and as a student was voted Miss Georgia Teachers College.

Sis married Eugene (Bud) William Strickland, Jr. after college and they moved back to Fitzgerald. They were married for 40 years before he passed away in 2001. She was a school teacher in Ocilla and Fitzgerald for several years until deciding to work in the family business. She managed Strickland Insurance Agency until it was sold in 1995, but continued employment there until retirement in 2001.

Sis will always be remembered as being beautiful inside and out. She was devoted to her family, her church, her community, and her Georgia Bulldogs. She loved to entertain, enjoyed playing bridge, and socializing with her many loyal friends. She loved to shop and had a particular fondness for shoes. Sis married Walter Eugene (Gene) Dorminey in 2007 and they continued being active in their community and church. She cherished her role as wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and true friend.

Sis was a longtime-active member of Central United Methodist Church where she served on many committees, was a member of Action Life Sunday school class, and participated in various Bible studies. She was a Stephen Minister and a member of the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by her loving husband of ten years, Gene Dorminey of Fitzgerald; her children and their spouses: Gene Strickland, III (Brenda) of Madison, Indiana and Dede Strickland Rowan (Don) of Newnan, Georgia; stepchildren: Linda Dorminey Cardwell (Paul) of Macon and Gary Dorminey of Albany; grandchildren: Kristy Strickland Skaggs, William Strickland, IV (Raven), Heys Rowan, Bennett Rowan, and Alan Cardwell (Ashley); several great-grandchildren, cherished sisters-in-law, and many wonderful friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Eugene W. (Bud) Strickland, Jr. and her brother, Cloyd Buchanan (Bucky) Heys.
