Obituary

Mildred "Millie" Palermo (Sapienza), 89, of Methuen, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2017 surrounded by her loving family at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mildred was born on January 28, 1928 to her hardworking parents, Santo and Grace (Magri) Sapienza in Lawrence, MA. After graduating with the Class of 1936 from Essex Agricultural High School she married her beloved sweetheart, Anselmo Palermo, in a simple, yet beautiful ceremony. Mildred and her husband settled in Lawrence and Methuen to raise their family. A lifelong employee of Caldor’s Department Store, she had the longest tenure of any employee. Mildred started with the company from the days when they first opened their doors in 1974 until they closed in 1996. She had many varied interests from the occasional jaunt to Foxwoods, singing, and painting, she was a person who always kept busy. Mildred was a person who was truly and deeply devoted to her family. As a devout Catholic, she was a communicant for St. Lucy’s Parish in Methuen. Mildred touched many lives and will always be fondly remembered.

Mildred is survived by her five loving children; Ronald and his wife Karen Palermo of Salem, NH, her daughter, Joan and her husband William Chase of Watertown, MA, her son, Thomas Palermo of San Jose, CA, her son, John Palermo of Methuen, MA, and her son Robert and his wife Donna Palermo of Salem NH. She was the cherished grandmother to twelve grandchildren; Kenneth, Jennifer, Laurie, Angela, Krystine, Melissa, Rohn, Nicholas, Olivia, Leo, Jeffrey, and Lindsay and also great-grandmother to Dominic. Mildred is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dear close friend and personal assistant, Donna Demers and Sister Rina Brunetti from St. Lucy’s Parish. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Anselmo Palermo, and her two children; her daughter, Janice Palermo, and her son, Kenneth Palermo. Mildred was also predeceased by her dear sister Anna Zanfagna and her husband Otto and her brother John Sapienza and his wife Winnie.

Visitation for Mildred will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017, 2:00 - 6:00 PM at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street, Methuen, MA. Friends and family are cordially invited. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 1, 2017, 11:00 AM at St. Lucy's Parish, 254 Merrimack St, Methuen, MA.
