Norene Frances Backus, 82, of Groton, passed away April 24, 2017 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, Connecticut.
Norene was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 31, 1934. She was a graduate of Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, and attended the University of Bridgeport. A lover of the arts, she was involved with community theater, and was an accomplished classical pianist. She also had a keen interest in politics and current events, and will most be remembered for her kindness and wry sense of humor.
Norene was formerly married to the late Owen F. Backus, and were longtime residents of Mystic, Connecticut. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Salls of Vermont; son Frederick Backus of Puerto Rico; daughters Elise Backus of California, Laura Backus Hall of Vermont, and Jennifer Rea of Connecticut; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Per her wishes, a memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
