Obituary

Derek M. O'Brien, a 2 year resident of St. Petersburg, Florida and formerly of Malden and Charlestown, entered into eternal life suddenly at his home in St. Petersburg, Florida on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. He was 44 years old.

Derek was born in Malden on December 29, 1972, a son of Joan M. (McCormick) O'Brien and Martin J. O'Brien. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1990 where he excelled on the varsity hockey team. He had been working as a painter in the St. Petersburg area of Florida. Derek was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching all the Boston sports teams.

Derek is the loving son of Joan M. (McCormick) O'Brien and retired Boston Fire Department Lieutenant Martin J. O'Brien and his wife Lila. He is the beloved brother of Martin O'Brien. He is the beloved husband of Allison (Petrie) O'Brien. He is the beloved father of Brittany Centola, Derek O'Brien, Brendan LaVallee, Nevan O'Brien and Pauly O'Brien. He is the beloved grandfather to Jonathan Centola. He is the beloved uncle to Ashley O'Brien and Bailey O'Brien. He is also lovingly survived by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Derek's visiting hours on Saturday morning, May 6, 2017 from 8:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 11 A.M. His burial is private.
