Obituary

Scott A. Petti age 62 of Brockton passed away Tuesday April 18, 2017 in his home, after a brief illness. He was the son of Marilyn L. “Snookie” (Fuller) Petti and the late Celestino M. “Charlie” Petti, Jr. A lifelong resident of Brockton, he was a 1972 graduate of Brockton High School. Scott attended Worcester Polytechnical Institute and later served in the United States Marine Corps from 1976-1986.

While in the Marines, Scott was stationed at Oahu, HI where he excelled in the Small Unit Leadership Course (SULC) program, achieving the top class ranking. He was selected from a pool of exceptional Marines to attend the USMC Drill Instructor Basic Training School. In July 1984, he was assigned to the USMC Recruit Training Depot, Camp Pendelton, CA, as a Drill Instructor.

Scott enjoyed mathematics, physics, challenges and intricate details. He worked as a precision machinist in the Brockton area for many years. He was also a self-taught violinist and had a collection of small violins that he would take to Boston Common on Sundays and give free lessons to any child who wanted to play. Many times, several years later, he would receive a letter from a parent telling him how their child was still playing and thanking him for getting them interested. Crosby, Stills and Nash played the song, “Teach Your Children Well” and that is what Scott emphasized while instructing young violinists.

In his younger years, Scott was a strong billiards enthusiast, a 9-ball specialist who played at Westgate Lanes in Brockton. It wasn’t uncommon to see him “run” many racks in a row in pursuit of a win.

Prior to graduating from high school, Scott had the opportunity to meet an individual who would have a profound and influential impact on his life, Dr. H. Meredith Berry of West Bridgewater, MA. Along with Dr. Walter A. Wichern, of New York, NY, Dr. Berry co-founded the Berwick Boys Foundation. Scott enjoyed the challenges that were set out for all of the boys to complete. The motto of the Berwick Boys is “The difficult we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer.” Scott carried those words with him throughout his life.

Scott was the brother of Charlyn M. Veracka and her husband David of Beverly Hills, FL, Anthony J. Petti of Brockton, Lance J. Petti of Easton, Joy S. Petti of Rehoboth, Former City Councilor Todd G. Petti and his wife Kathy of Brockton, Gina F. Petti of Lancaster, CA., Shelly G. Nadeau and her husband Marcel of Rehoboth, Tory M. Petti of Brockton, Matthew D. Petti and his wife Kathy of Brockton, Atty. Mark D. Petti and his wife Kim of Brockton and the late Charles M. "Chuck" Petti. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St (Rte 123) Brockton on Monday, 4-7:30pm with a funeral service at 7:30pm. Burial will be private. Please consider donations in Scott’s name to the Berwick Boys Foundation, 335 West St, West Bridgewater, MA 02379.
