Irene I. Ackerman, L.P.N.
Retired Oblate Novitiate Nurse

TEWKSBURY: Irene I. (O’Hara) Ackerman, age 93, a resident of Tewksbury for over 60 years, and longtime communicant and supporter of St. William’s Parish, passed away at the Blaire House Assisted Living on Monday, March 27, 2017.

She was the beloved wife of George N. Ackerman, Jr., who she met while her family was vacationing at Silver Lake in Wilmington. George passed away on January 15, 2012.

Born in Boston on January 10, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William J. O’Hara and the late Frances L. (Dillon) O’Hara.
Irene was raised in Charlestown, attended Charlestown schools, and graduated from the High School of Practical Arts.

She later enrolled in the nursing program at the Tewksbury Hospital, where she received certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Prior to her retirement, Irene provided nursing care to the retired Priests at the Oblate Novitiate on Chandler Street in Tewksbury.

Irene enjoyed traveling to Ireland, Scotland, England, Paris, Italy, Spain, and especially enjoyed the times spent in St. Marten. In addition, Irene loved sewing, playing cards, a game of bingo, working on jigsaw puzzles, and bowling at the original Wamesit Lanes in Tewksbury.

She is survived by two daughters, Martha A. Sermier and her husband Robert of New York, NY, and Susan A. Mandhyan and her husband Indur of Princeton, NJ; two granddaughters, Viveka and Mallika Mandhyan also of Princeton, NJ; one brother, Vincent O’Hara of Clovis, CA; one sister, Madeline Ferretti of Brockton, MA.

Calling hours are Thursday, March 30, from 5- 8 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Her funeral will begin on Friday, March 31, at 9 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by her Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment at St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene’s memory may be made to St. William’s Church, 1351 Main Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876 or to Lowell General Hospital-Saint’s Campus, 1 Hospital Drive, Lowell, MA 01852.
