Obituary

Martha Magdalene Bergeson, resident of Harwich, MA, died suddenly at the Wingate at Andover at the age of 95 on March 20th, 2017. She was born Martha Magdalene Julius in Axtell, Kansas on March 26th 1921 to Reverend Carl and Sene Julius.

Martha was a graduate of Bethany College in Lindsborg Kansas where she met the love of her life her future husband Ernest Bergeson. Martha received her Master’s degree in English from Kansas University in 1944 and Teachers certification from Worcester MA State College in 1964.
Martha and Ernest served Lutheran congregations in Mason City, Iowa, Seattle, Washington, Auburn, MA and Waltham, MA, eventually retiring to Harwich, MA in 1986. Martha sang in the choir and was organist at several of the churches.

Martha served as a substitute and Junior High English teacher in Auburn, MA and, as a 5th grade teacher in Waltham, Mass. In retirement she contributed/crafted quilts with her Esther Circle group at Saint Peters Church in Harwich.

She is survived by her sons and daughter Dr Marvin & Cindy Bergeson of Fairbanks, Alaska, Dr. Rachel Bergeson & Dr. Brian Margolis of E. Setauket, NY and Mark & Paula Bergeson of Andover, MA, her 9 grandchildren, Bo Bergeson, Jon Bergeson, Justin Margolis, Carol Margolis, Andrew Margolis, Eric Margolis, Jeremy Bergeson, Ian Bergeson and Alexander Bergeson and her 9 great grandchildren, Sawyer, Marissa, Ridley, Oliver, Daisy, Logan, Lucy, Lili, and Felix. She is also survived by her sister Mildred Stevens.

She was predeceased by her husband Ernest Axel Eugene Bergeson, her son Jon, her grandson Will, her sisters Ruth Andersson, Francis Davis, and her brother Carl Julius.
Martha’s love was always her family which stretched far beyond her bloodlines and extended to the entire human race under God’s care.

A Memorial Service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 360 Main Street in Andover, on Saturday the 25th of March, 2017 @ 3:00 preceded by a wake at 2:00 and followed by light finger foods served in the fellowship hall. An internment ceremony at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in Harwich Ma will be determined at a later date.
