Marcia L. Calhoun, 85, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday, March 17, 2017, at Crossview Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Parmer officiating. Her granddaughter, Cherilyn Oliver, will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 PM until 8 PM, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Calhoun was born January 15, 1932, in Ben Hill County, Georgia, the only child of the late O. C. & Bertie Stokes Langford. She lived in the community all of her life. She was a 1949 graduate of Fitzgerald High School, being the first class to attend through the 12th grade. While in high school she was voted the most athletic girl. Mrs. Calhoun worked as a teller for the National Bank of Fitzgerald and as secretary to Clayton Jay at the Jay, Garden, Sherrell Law Firm. Following her retirement, she worked seasonally for Buck Anderson at the Dixie Peanut Company and alongside her husband as a devoted farm wife. Mrs. Calhoun was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church where she was a choir member, taught Sunday School and assisted with Vacation Bible School.
She is survived by her children: Sandy & Tim Woods, Cherry & David Carter and Debby & Kenneth Downing, all of Fitzgerald; six grandchildren: Cherilyn & Will Oliver, Casey Carter, Dede & Jesse Mickle, Benji Giddens, Caleb Carter, and Mandy Giddens and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, John D. Calhoun.
