Obituary

Fernand Alves, 92, of New Bedford died Friday March 10, 2017 at Sacred Heart Home after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Geraldine (Ferreira) Alves; they had been married for 64 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joaquim and Anna (Roderiques) Alves, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Mr. Alves was formerly employed as a custodian for the New Bedford Public School Department, retiring from the Dunbar School.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers in France and Germany. He was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was an avid bowler, who also enjoyed camping and square dancing.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine; his daughter, Karen King and her husband Mark of Dartmouth; four grandchildren, Ryan Alves of New Bedford, Katie Costa and her husband Shawn of Freetown, and Bethany King and Jacob King both of Dartmouth; three great-grandchildren, Cassidy Costa, Myles Costa, and Gabriella Bradley; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
He was the father of the late Randall F. Alves and brother of the late Idilio Alves.
His family would like to give special thanks to Community Nurse Home Care for the excellent care given to him.
His Funeral will be held on Friday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM.
