…writer, former Lowell Sun correspondent; 64
TEWKSBURY - Marie Elaine Whelan, age 64, an accomplished writer and lifelong Tewksbury resident, died unexpectedly Saturday night, March 4, at Lahey Medical Center in Burlington, from complications of a Stroke suffered on Friday.
She was born in Everett, in April 1952, one of three children of the late Edna (Gardner) and William F. Whelan Sr., but moved to Tewksbury in 1964. She graduated Tewksbury Memorial High School with the Class of 1970.
In addition to raising her family she worked as a technical writer for Millipore Company in Bedford, and later the Lowell Sun newspaper as a correspondent. She would later become a freelance writer and author, and was also accomplished in drawing, and musically as a pianist.
She leaves three children, Gus W. Cota of Tewksbury, Christopher J. Cota and his partner Erin Casey of Boston, and Katherine C. Cota MacDonald and her husband Stephen MacDonald of Woburn; a sister and brother, Jeannene R. Tracy of Andover and William F. Whelan Jr., of Tewksbury; her former husband, Joseph A. Cota of Andover; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visiting hours Wednesday, Mar. 8, from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. Her funeral Service will follow on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Tewksbury Cemetery.
