Susan van Noppen Cowen, 84, of Winchester, MA died in her sleep on February 20th. She was currently living at The Woburn Nursing Home. A resident of Winchester for 44 years, she was born in Chicago and spent her early childhood in Elmhurst, IL. A graduate of Mamaroneck HS, Mamaroneck, NY, 1950 and Michigan State University, 1954 - where she was president of the Glee Club, and a swim & dive team member. Susan was a music teacher in New York, and taught piano for 15 years in Winchester. She was an avid tennis player, and fixture at the Packer Tennis Courts in Winchester through the 70’s and 80’s. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was independent and personable with a quick wit. She is survived by her four children: Bradford Cowen of Winchester; Nancy C. Cowen of Lexington; Charles L. Cowen of Wakefield, NH and Anne (Cowen) Cerrato of Exeter, NH. Grandmother to Emma, Ben, Andrew and Max Cerrato, Mitchell Therieau, Adelle Cowen-Therieau and James Cowen.
Formerly married to the late Clark A. Cowen. Sister to the late Nancy Thomas, Joanne Lightfoot, and James van Noppen.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 4th, at 11:30 am at The First Parish Church, 7 Harrington Rd, Lexington. All are welcome. Interment is private. Memorial Donations in Susan's name may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20006.
