Obituary

OATES, William Armstrong, Jr. Died Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the age of 74 from complications of multiple myeloma. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on July 27, l942 to William Armstrong and Margaret Nichols Oates. His childhood was spent at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Macy Oates (Muffy) and three married daughters - Elizabeth (Lilly) Rosegard, Katherine (Kate) Sweeny, and Emily Torres as well as brothers, James Maclay Oates and Thomas Nichols Oates. Bill has six grandchildren: Ethan and Kate Rosegard, Macy and Walker Sweeny, and Billy and Georgie Torres.

He graduated from Groton School, Colby College, and the Harvard Business School. He was an investment advisor and founding partner of Northeast Investment Management in Boston, where he managed Northeast Investors Growth Fund for more than 30 years, and also a former director of the Horn Corporation, Clifford of Vermont and Furman Lumber. He was a trustee of Colby College and a director of the Colby Art Museum, a former trustee and treasurer of the Roxbury Latin School, and a former trustee and board president of Groton School. While living in Dedham, MA all his married life, he had avid interests in art collecting, gardening, photography, and travel.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Dedham on Friday, February 24 at 11AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited.
